Anthropic has unveiled the Claude apps gateway, aimed at streamlining the deployment of its agentic coding tool, Claude Code, within organizational settings on Google Cloud. This development addresses the challenges associated with managing developer credentials and enforcing governance on a larger scale.

Centralized governance features

The gateway centralizes governance functions such as identity management, policy enforcement, telemetry, and cost controls that developers and platform admins previously managed separately. This enables organizations to enhance security and streamline operations.

Identity management improvements

When deploying the gateway, the /login request routes through an organization's identity provider (IdP), such as Google Workspace. This process ensures that sensitive information does not reside on developers' machines, simplifying user onboarding and offboarding.

Policy enforcement and telemetry

Policies for role-based access control (RBAC) reside within a centralized configuration file, gateway.yaml, which is checked server-side. This ensures that any updates are propagated throughout the organization promptly, enhancing security and compliance. The gateway also facilitates accurate telemetry by associating usage metrics with verified user identities.

Control over spending

The Claude apps gateway allows organizations to establish spending limits, whether daily, weekly, or monthly, per user, group, or organization. This feature is essential for managing costs associated with cloud services as usage scales.
